About Kapell
Kapell is a Mac music player for the Apple Music® library you already have. As a track plays, it shows who produced it, who played and wrote on it, what it sampled, and where it was recorded — every fact cited .
Streaming put an absolutely wild amount of music at our fingertips, but it also lost some stuff. The liner notes in the album or CD used to show us who played, write, or recorded the music we love. Seeking it out can deeper on experience, and lead us to even more music and leads to a thoughtful journey. That's the idea at least!
Kapell seeks out information about the album, track, or artist using sites like Wikipedia, MusicBrainz, Apple's Music's catalog, and a few proprietary sources I've build (and continue to build). This lets you tap or click on a a name and find everything else they workd on, including lots of people and places for which Apple Music has no page at all.
Kapell plays through the subscription and library you already have, in lossless and hi-res. There's nothing to migrate and no account to make.
What makes it different
- Credits, samples, and history. Drawn from MusicBrainz, Wikipedia, Wikidata, and more, with every source cited.
- Credits go somewhere. Producers, engineers, session players, labels, and studios are all browsable pages.
- Genre browsing, narrowed by decade, format, and whether you've heard it yet.
- The Listen Log — a private play history kept on your Mac and synced through your own iCloud, with optional scrobbling to Last.fm and ListenBrainz.
- Crates — hand-built sets you listen through on purpose, which stay out of Apple Music's Recently Played.
- Bought once. No subscription; enrichment is included.
