# Enable Lossless audio in Apple Music

Kapell plays through the Apple Music subscription you already have — so Lossless is a setting you turn on in Apple Music, and Kapell plays it back at that quality.

## Why this lives in Apple Music

Kapell doesn’t host or stream music of its own. It plays *through* the Apple Music subscription and library you already have (see [How enrichment works](https://kapell.fm/docs/how-enrichment-works)), which means audio quality is set where the music actually comes from — the Apple Music app, not Kapell.

Turn Lossless on there, and Kapell plays at that quality, with the real bit-depth and sample rate shown live in the signal-path readout on the telemetry rack.

Set it once, in Apple Music.

Because Kapell rides your existing subscription, the Lossless toggle — and any other playback-quality setting — lives in Apple Music. Flip it on there and Kapell follows.

## Turn it on, on a Mac

01Open the Apple Music app and choose **Music ▸ Settings** in the menu bar.

02Click the **Playback** tab.

03Under **Audio Quality**, switch on **Lossless Audio**.

04Choose your tier for streaming and downloads — Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless.

## Turn it on, on iPhone or iPad

Kapell is only offered for macOS today (for now!) but here’s how to enable lossless on mobile devices for completeness.

01Open **Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Music**.

02Tap **Audio Quality**.

03Turn on **Lossless Audio** and pick your tier.

## The two tiers

- LL**Lossless** — up to 24-bit / 48 kHz. Plays on most outputs.
- HR**Hi-Res Lossless** — up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. Above 48 kHz needs an external DAC on most Macs.

## Good to know

- BT**Bluetooth isn't lossless.** AirPods and most wireless headphones use codecs that can't carry it — use a wired connection or a USB DAC for true lossless.
- DAC**Hi-Res above 48 kHz needs an external DAC.** Kapell's signal-path readout shows what you're actually getting.
- SUB**An active Apple Music subscription is required** to stream lossless from the catalog.
